This chimney had seen better days...
This chimney was literally disintegating before our eyes. On a weekly basis bricks were falling into the mulch bed below. Fortunately not an area where anyone wouuld walk. Clearly not an ideal situation. This needed to be a rebuilt.
As always, the damaged material has to be removed before the new can go in.
Out with the old, in with the new...
Once we got the old chimney down, it was a simple matter of rebuilding it to the same dimensions. In this case, modern bricks are slightly different dimensions than the original ones by 1/4″ in all dimensions. You might think it’s a small difference, but over the length of multiple bricks this became a larger issue. As you can see, our solution here was to slightly increase the joint size as well as add short 1 1/4″ cut-offs to make up the difference. We placed these in a way that created an offset pattern to make it more blended.
At the end of the day...
Since this chimney is not used, we sealed it with a solid slate cap set into the crown to keep animals and moisture out. The cap protects the structure and can be removed should future occupants wish to use the chimney. We finished the pillars and installed a new slate cap to top it off. I think this came out pretty well.
